EMI Vent Panels: Standard and Custom Products from MAJR

Air flow is an important part of many military electronic systems. Keeping equipment cool and air flowing is paramount to long term electronic system stability but creating openings for cooling can cause engineering issues. During design and manufacturing many electronic systems needing protection from EMI/RFI will pose a challenge that needs to be addressed around air flow that can be solved with MAJR’s EMI vent panels.

EMI shielded vent panels take the worry out of EMI / RFI signal interference. They limit the amount of radiation from the external environment that can penetrate circuits and, conversely, influences how much EMI energy generated by the circuit can escape into the external environment.

Sizes and types of Shielded Vent Panels

Choosing the right ventilation panels that will best meet your design considerations is based on three main criteria: shielding, airflow and mounting. Ready-to-install vents provide optimum EMI/RFI shielding with minimum pressure drop for the ventilating air. There are four main types of shielded ventilation panels:

  • Honeycomb Ventilation Panels
  • Fan Ventilation Panels
  • Shielded Air Filtration Panels
  • Honeycomb Waveguide Panels

Standard EMI Ventilation Panels

Standard EMI ventilation panels from MAJR Products are ready-to-install panels in standard sizes made from brass, steel or aluminum for the electronics industry with minimum pressure drop for the ventilating air. Shielding effectiveness is accomplished using waveguide design principles. For most applications, aluminum Code-32 honeycomb will provide a degree of attenuation that will be within specification limits However, for the lower frequency range (H-Field) it may be necessary to specify MAJR’s material Tin Plated Steel Code-44. Although heavier in weight than aluminum, an increase of 20-40dB H-field shielding effectiveness can be achieved in the lower frequency range by the use of the higher permeable-44 grade.

Custom EMI Ventilation Panels

In an effort to provide the best possible service to its customers, MAJR Products can manufacture Custom EMI Ventilation Panels for difficult round, curved or specialized shape requirements and still maintain a high level of EMI/RFI attenuation and low upfront set-up costs.

Using customer-uploaded vent panel specifications, MAJR Products can produce specialized vent panel estimates in a few days and provide in-house technical assistance on designs before parts move into the production phase.

MAJR’s Custom EMI Ventilation Panels can be produced in both Honeycomb Waveguide and Air Ventilation styles depending on the shielding and airflow requirements. For example:

Custom Honeycomb Waveguide Panels

Available in aluminum, brass, steel and stainless steel to meet the specific attenuation requirements of MIL-STD-461 and MIL-STD 810 by facilitating wavelength beyond cutoff.  While they can be made in a variety of shapes and sizes, they still allow for maximum air flow. With integrated gasketing material appropriate for the application, these custom waveguide panels can be supplied with captive fasteners or frame through-holes mounting options.

Custom Air Ventilation Panels

Achieve attenuation of EMI/RFI noise while providing a minimal air pressure drop. Most applications will call for an aluminum code-57 filter media and, when used with MAJR’s integrated gasket, will achieve EMI shielding to levels that meet or exceed commercial requirements.
