Industrial, Instrumentation Electronics

Industrial electronics includes a broad range of devices in many industries often involving the operation of multiple devices or equipment within close proximity of each other. Limiting the generation of EMI from a device as well as protecting it from external sources of EMI or RFI is critical to modern factory facilities.

EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) and RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) shielding is critical in industrial environments because modern factories and facilities combine high-power electrical equipment with highly sensitive control, sensing, and communication systems. Even brief interference can lead to data corruption, control errors, false sensor readings, unplanned downtime, or product quality issues.

Effective shielding ensures that electrical noise is contained at its source and prevented from coupling into vulnerable circuits. Shielded control cabinets protect PLCs and industrial PCs, while shielded cables preserve signal integrity for sensors, encoders, and industrial Ethernet networks. In robotic cells and automated production lines, shielding prevents EMI from causing motion errors or communication faults that could impact safety and precision.

RFI shielding is equally important as wireless devices, industrial IoT systems, and radio-based communications become more common on factory floors. Proper grounding, filtered cable entries, and metal enclosures work together to create stable, predictable operating conditions. Overall, EMI and RFI shielding is not optional—it is a foundational requirement for reliability, safety, and performance in modern industrial systems.

White Paper – How Military-Grade Shielding Strategies Protect Government and Commercial Data Centers From EMI & RFI

Government and commercial data centers are densely packed with servers, routers, power supplies, and network switches, making them susceptible to both electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI). Such interferences tend to come from both internal and external sources, including improperly shielded equipment, nearby broadcast towers, industrial machinery and purposeful criminal activity. Left unaddressed,…

EMP Shielding: The Background, Need and Solutions

Definitions & Distinctions HEMP is defined as an instantaneous, intense electromagnetic pulse (EMP) field that can overload and disrupt from great distances electrical systems and microcircuits. It is generally assumed if one occurred it would be set off by a high altitude nuclear explosion; obtainable by missile flight1 or, more recently believed, from a satellite.…

MAJR Shielding Products For SCIFs | A Strategic Design Guide

What exactly are SCIFs, and why do engineers need a variety of mil-spec shielding products when designing them? SCIF’s are Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (pronounced “skiff”), a U.S. Department of Defense term for a secure room. It can be a secure room or data center that guards against electronic surveillance and suppresses data leakage of…

Where And How To Source Shield Seal Gaskets | RFI-EMI Shield Products

Where can engineers, designers, and technical teams go to find the technical specifications and professional assistance they need to source conductive environmental gaskets and other RFI/EMI shielding products? Depending on the application, EMI shield seal gaskets are available in various material combinations, configurations, and gasket sizes. So, where can engineers get started on their search…

EMI Grounding Washers from MAJR

When you are working to ensure that your electronic enclosures are securely sealed from EMI, it’s important to use the correct materials for your application. In the event that you’re using standard flat washers that are improperly designed EMI leakage can occur causing failure in the equipment and entire operating system.  The MAJR Way MAJR…

Waveguide Ventilation Panels from MAJR Products

What is a Honeycomb Waveguide Panel Shielding honeycomb waveguide panels let airflow into and out of an EMI/RFI shielded enclosure. The entering fresh air may be either cooled, heated, or at ambient temperature depending on the shielded enclosure environment and contents. For electronic equipment, the primary reason for airflow is usually to cool electronics; if…

MAJRAbsorber: Uses & Benefits

Radio frequencies (RF) are an amazing tool to send communications via airwaves to a receiver device that can be thousands of miles away. They’ve been harnessed since the beginnings of radio and now reach into every crevice of daily life for consumers and manufacturers.   Unfortunately, radio frequencies also cause Electromagnetic interference (EMI), also called radio-frequency…
